What we do

What is SMART Recovery

SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. Our meetings are respectful, practical discussions led by trained facilitators, where people learn science-based tools to build motivation, cope with urges, manage thoughts and feelings, and live a balanced life.

People set their own goals. Abstinence is not required, and SMART works on its own or alongside counselling, treatment, medication, or harm reduction. There is no stigma and no labels, and there is a place for everyone, wherever they are in their journey.

What we stand for

Our values

People lead their own recovery

Self-management and choice are at the core of SMART. You set your own goals and choose the tools and pathways that fit.

We learn and grow together

Our meetings are respectful discussions led by trained facilitators, where people share experiences and learn from one another.

No stigma, no labels

We meet everyone with dignity and respect, whatever their story and wherever they are in their recovery journey.

Everyone belongs

Whatever your background, culture, or identity, there is a place for you at SMART.

We follow the science, and keep evolving

SMART's tools and approaches are science based, and we evolve as research and our own experiences grow.

We grow through partnerships

We work with volunteers, communities, organizations, donors, and funders to reach more people and widen SMART's impact.

We are accountable and transparent

We set goals, follow through, and deliver on our commitments.

Why your gift matters

Where your donation goes

SMART Recovery Canada largely funds itself through facilitator training and handbook sales. That earned revenue keeps meetings running, but it does not stretch far enough to meet the need across a country this size. Donations and partnerships are what let us reach further, from remote towns with no meeting yet to the territories that need more support. Your gift also powers the quiet backbone that makes every meeting possible: the platforms, the technology, the materials, and the coordination behind the scenes.

Your gift helps

  • Keeps meetings running at no cost to participants, online and in person
  • Powers the technology and platforms behind every meeting
  • Helps start meetings where none exist yet, including rural, remote, and the territories
  • Supports the handbooks, tools, and resources facilitators rely on
  • Strengthens the national organization so local meetings can thrive

Be part of it

Be part of someone's turning point

Every meeting starts with one person deciding to show up, and someone trained and ready to meet them. Your gift keeps that door open across Canada, at no cost to the people who walk through it.
