What SMART Recovery is

SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. Our meetings are respectful, practical discussions led by trained facilitators, where people learn science-based tools to build motivation, cope with urges, manage thoughts and feelings, and live a balanced life.

People set their own goals. Abstinence is not required, and SMART works on its own or alongside counselling, treatment, medication, or harm reduction. There is no stigma and no labels, and there is a place for everyone, wherever they are in their journey.

What we stand for

People lead their own recovery

You set your own goals and choose the tools and pathways that fit your life.

We learn and grow together

Meetings are respectful discussions where people share experience and learn from one another.

No stigma, no labels

We meet everyone with dignity and respect, whatever their story.

Everyone belongs

Whatever your background, culture, or identity, there is a place for you at SMART.

We follow the science, and keep evolving

Our tools are science-based, and they grow as research and experience grow.

We grow through partnerships

We work with communities, organizations, donors, and funders to reach more people.

Our reach goes further than the numbers

Beyond our public meetings, trained facilitators run private SMART meetings inside treatment centres, shelters, housing programs, correctional facilities, and community services across Canada. Those are not counted above, so our real reach is wider still.

Why your gift matters

SMART Recovery Canada largely funds itself through facilitator training and handbook sales. That earned revenue keeps meetings running, but it does not stretch far enough to meet the need.

Donations and partnerships are what let us reach further: into rural and remote communities, into the territories, and into places where no meeting exists yet. Your gift also powers the backbone that makes every meeting possible, the platforms, technology, materials, and coordination behind the scenes.

Where your donation goes

  • Keeps meetings running at no cost to participants, online and in person
  • Powers the technology and platforms behind every meeting
  • Helps start meetings where none exist yet, including rural, remote, and the territories
  • Supports the handbooks, tools, and resources facilitators rely on
  • Strengthens the national organization so local meetings can thrive

Be part of it

Be part of someone's turning point

Every meeting starts with one person deciding to show up, and someone trained and ready to meet them. Your gift keeps that door open across Canada, at no cost to the people who walk through it.
