SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. Our meetings are respectful, practical discussions led by trained facilitators, where people learn science-based tools to build motivation, cope with urges, manage thoughts and feelings, and live a balanced life.
People set their own goals. Abstinence is not required, and SMART works on its own or alongside counselling, treatment, medication, or harm reduction. There is no stigma and no labels, and there is a place for everyone, wherever they are in their journey.
You set your own goals and choose the tools and pathways that fit your life.
Meetings are respectful discussions where people share experience and learn from one another.
We meet everyone with dignity and respect, whatever their story.
Whatever your background, culture, or identity, there is a place for you at SMART.
Our tools are science-based, and they grow as research and experience grow.
We work with communities, organizations, donors, and funders to reach more people.
We set goals, follow through, and deliver on our commitments.

Beyond our public meetings, trained facilitators run private SMART meetings inside treatment centres, shelters, housing programs, correctional facilities, and community services across Canada. Those are not counted above, so our real reach is wider still.

SMART Recovery Canada largely funds itself through facilitator training and handbook sales. That earned revenue keeps meetings running, but it does not stretch far enough to meet the need.
Donations and partnerships are what let us reach further: into rural and remote communities, into the territories, and into places where no meeting exists yet. Your gift also powers the backbone that makes every meeting possible, the platforms, technology, materials, and coordination behind the scenes.
